Artist Statement
Underneath culture, traditions, upbringings, appearances, and beliefs that make us all unique, there are universal attributes that tie all of us together. I aim for my work to be a reminder of this, an exploration of the human condition. Not just by the subject matter I center my films around, but the way in which they are a vessel for shared emotions.
I work best within character-driven stories, work that makes stepping into a character’s perspective seamless. An audience member might not know exactly what it means to lose a parent, but maybe experiencing that loss through a character helps them reconcile with the grief of losing their pet. Some of my biggest influences, from Ingmar Bergman to Yasujiro Ozu to Matt Reeves, thrived with this way of storytelling. For these filmmakers, the plot was the way into the character, not the other way around. With this same mindset and approach, I created Interim. This film explores Faye, who through grieving her own death, might help others to grieve the death of others in their life. Even with just a few short minutes, I really wanted the film to be a character-study.
In most everything I direct, I also compose and produce the music. The audible experience is just as important to a film as the visual. So I find that directing and composing for a project in tandem really ties everything together and makes the film truly immersive. With all of these skills and awareness combined, I hope to continue to make work that allows anyone to embody a character.
